02.05.09 Cube Team Recap

Hi all,
Here's an update from Team Cube. We discussed some major elements from each person's schematic design and came up with some general ideas of what we would like the space to consist of. We are going to take Jimmy's central object, but create a path through the cube with floor indications throughout the space (maybe the stickers will wrap around the cube to create a more dynamic path). The back wall will remain for projection of all photographed works and opposite that will be a stack of cubes (building blocks) for sitting and moving around. Some cubes will not be mobile and contain 3D models. One wall of the interior structure will have the sliding panel system (slide, push, pull, turn, etc). Another portion will have the large trace paper element. Alcove for the blogging station in one corner. Near the blogging station, we would like to have a little blurb about the exhibition and design/build process. To maximize the amount of work displayed, we will be using existing walls for display. We would like to show some sort of progression of works, but haven't quite figured out how this will be arranged throughout the space. One idea is to use color on the labels to indicate the year. (ex: 1st year has all yellow labels, 2nd year in orange, etc). We can also take this idea to create a legend with color indications and icons and have hand out at entrance of exhibition to walk people through the space. We are considering the following materials: wood, gyp board, paint (bold colors on exterior and pure white within the cube), chalkboard paint, upholstery for seating, metal/resin panels for track system. AV- we will use the existing set up for projection and will need additional set up for the blog station and lighting within the cube. We will go into more detail as we develop the drawings. We should regroup on Sunday afternoon (3ish) and another day this week (TBD) to go over the plans and see what else we will need for Thursdays class. If you cant make it, keep in touch via email!

Cube Team Responsibilities are as follows:

Jimi: preliminary 2D floor plan; he will be adding the major elements and general notes and email out to the group for additional revisions (PDF version? CAD? both maybe). We should be getting feedback from everyone on the design of the space, whether via email or at our group meet ups.

Hayley: she will be working on the post card (hard copy and PDF or JPEG to Jane on Monday). Also a first draft of an exhibition handout- includes color coded floor plan and icons to indicate points of interest within the exhibition.

Cait: I will be creating a list of materials and quantities needed and researching on what may be available to us. I will also come up with some alternatives to minimize out-of-pocket costs. I think we should strive for all reclaimed/recycled materials. In the same respects, i think we should recycle/ reuse all materials at the completion of the exhibition, so we will need to arrange for that at a later date.

Stephen: AV/electrical equipment inquiry/availability, gathering up some more students works for the exhibition (i think we ALL need to start harassing people about putting their work in the folder- we don't have enough to choose from at this point and certainly not the best of the department)

Lauren: after the 2D plan is near completion, Lauren will start the elevations of the space showing important elements discussed above. 2-3 elevations should be sufficient.

Jessie and Sarah: i didn't want to assign you guys anything without your feedback, so let us know what you're interesting/ capable of working on this week. We are going to need some 'mock-ups' for the 1" scale model. They don't have to be complete, it's just to get some general ideas across. We also need some images from 3D CAD or MAX- maybe we have use Jimi's existing model of the space and adjust accordingly. Also, check in with Jimi and Lauren on the drawings- they may need some help with revisions, etc.

Some of these things we may be be able to all work on collaboratively- especially as ideas are still forming and the design develops. We should email/post to blog any drawings, research and information as we come across it- even if its not finalized.

**General notes: we each owe Sarah $8 for the model making materials- she was nice enough to charge the expense, so lets try to get that to her this week! AND everyone needs to JPEG their individual concepts and place in folder on enterprise so that Jimi can upload to blog. One image per person.

Okay- I think that is everything I can think of.
