Summer Installation

We have the perforated wall up on the break room and I was hoping we can set up the wall and piece that two plywood together. It would be a memorial for the first Design/Build class and the adjacent pin-up wall we can place our images! Lets all do this! Who wants to help?

Wednesday Night Wrap-Up

On behalf of the the Design-Build team and participating artists, thank you to all of the guests who braved the rain and joined us this evening. We had a great time, and hope you did, too.

Watch this space for more documentation of the evening, the exhibition and beyond.

About those cupcakes...

Thanks to Butter Lane Cupcakes

Mmmm....

But please remember to look at the exhibition.

The Time is Now!

Wherever you are in the word, welcome! And happy April Fools Day.

The time is 5pm and our reception is off to a great start. If you're in Chelsea, drop by, we're open until 7pm. The gallery is on the ground floor and you won't miss the crowd. Come fast for the cupcakes before they run out!

We have photographer Tanya Braganti here to help capture highlights of the evening, and we'll post some photos before long.

installation week update

show was scheduled to open today but many prints had to be sent back to be reprinted.

the construction of the box has finally come to completion today. the final wall with perforations was successfully installed today without problems. the class has decided to paint the inside of the perforation wall with white and leave the outside with its natural finish. Sarah has come up with a brilliant idea of painting the perforated cuts yellow as a detail and will execute as time allows.

the project is finally almost finished. we just have to put up the prints and keep performing as we're supposed to and we will put on a good show on Wednesday.

thanks to everyone for putting in extra time and money to make this possible.

keep up the good work.

Since We Last Posted, Dear Reader....

So. Think those pictures of dusty moppets assembling a wood skeleton are the last word? Adorable, but no, not at all. Since you last heard from us, we have packed up our secret lair in the SVA Sculpture Center and set up shop in our final destination: The West Side Gallery, 133/141 West 21 Street, New York NY. Walls have been erected. Paint has been rolled. Art is being installed... You get the idea.

And speaking of dusty moppets, we've recently added to the family! Some of our first year students have graciously volunteered to help (and a few others, and we love you too). To their parents: we're taking good care of them and will return them good as new, and possibly with new skills!

Before I sign off, let me invite you to drop by. The reception is Wednesday evening -- April Fools Day -- and you know that art schools are good for people-watching on weeknights. Right? Right! Bring friends, and a camera. Yes, free food will be supplied. Oh, and we'll all be there! And do we have stories that can't be printed here!

For more information: please read and print our evite. The reception and listed hours are free and open to the public.

And for the adventurous: we'll likely be working in the gallery up to then. (See public hours in evite.) Note that some of us like licorice. Some of us need hugs. Just don't tap on the glass...you know that always ends badly...

Class on March 20th - Build Build Build!

In yesterdays class, we split into 3 gangs and began to erect the walls and attach the homosote panels.

For the painting of the structure, we will cover the inside with 1 coat of primer (Caitlin's momma has donated a gallon of primer so a big thank you to her!), and we will also have 1 - 2 coats of white paint in an eggshell finish. We will most likely only need 1 gallon of this, which we still need to purchase. As far as the exterior of the structure, right now it will be left unfinished unless more of you rally to have it painted a color.

Later we had a meeting with Richard Brooks, Eric, and Simone to go over the installation details. Here is a review of what we covered:

We will have
3 official installation days, however this is flexible and we can extend it longer if we need the time. We need to stress that safety comes first and we must take our time to do a good and safe job.

We can start installing as early as Tuesday, and Illya will be there to supervise around 4pm.

When we are working in the gallery, we will need staff supervision. The
exhibition staff leaves at 6pm, so if we are planning on working into the night, we need to set up another supervisor accordingly.

When we are there, we need to respect the storage space and keep everything organized, as Eric goes to great lengths to keep everything in order. There are about 2 -3 screw guns, paint rollers, a hanging kit, and other various items that we can use. Since there is a limited amount of items like screw guns,
it would be ideal for us to bring our own tools.

As far as the removal process, we will only have 1 day to get everything out. This will happen on
Monday, April 13th bright and early at 8am. It is critical to do this as quickly as possible, and we will need to set up 3 shifts - morning, afternoon, and evening - to get everyone to participate. If push comes to shove and we need a little extra time, we can use the first half of Tuesday to continue dissembling. However, everything MUST be out of the gallery by mid-day Tuesday. I believe the plan is to dissemble the pieces and have them delivered to the sculpture building, so that they can be recycled and reused.

That pretty much covers everything for now. Keep up the great work everyone - we're almost there!

building day 2 after spring break

Today we began with Hayley and Illya by finishing cutting the plywood pieces for the display cases. Stephen and Loren came and helped us unload and install the homasote that have finnaly arrived. Hanna, Haena and Andrew arrived later in the day and helped us finish up today's tasks.

here's a list of what has been done today

-front faces for the plywood displaycases
-last framing on the perferated wall
-plywood seals for the openings
-homasote on one side of the entrance wall and on one side above the kiosk

after reviewing the plywood layout that's been done yesterday. we need to revise the arrangement again so that there're less seams shown on the as people walk through the cube

we're also running low on the materials right now so we have to start to improvise a little more as we build.

spring break building - day 2

today is the second day of fabrication during the spring break. so far so good guys!! we've finished more then half of the framing and we already used up more then half of the studs Jane got for us. Jo from the junior class came to help today. thanks Jo!! Illya took time and stayed with us until 7 and we've only got 3 more frames to go for the walls. here's a list of walls we've done so far.

-south entrance wall with bottom opening
-blog station with table
-east wall with reach-hole
-west wall which is going to be attached to the back cabinet
-and a quarter of the north cabinet framing

we still have a lot of work to do. let's keep up the good work.

Class 8

TOOL TRAINING BEGINS!
  • Thursday March 5th- We are able to gain access to the SVA Sculpture Building on 30 West 17th Street and begin training. We learned the rules for utilizing the space, signing out tools and the proper use of the machines (see uploaded images). In addition to testing the tools, we split up into 3 groups and we are tasked to construct a 14" x 14" wooden box.
  • NOTE: Sculpture Building is closed on Fridays.
  • In regards to the construction process for the Transformations exhibition on April 1st- we are currently coordinating our schedules to make ourselves available for building the pieces. The materials are being delivered to the Sculpture Building where we will then begin with cutting down the pieces necessary for the base and supports of the built structure.
  • We need to print out the latest construction documents (2 copies- one for the studio and one for the sculpture building) as well as set up a construction schedule estimating how long each task will take and how many people will be needed.
  • A small group of us went over to the new sculpture building on 335 West 16th Street as well as 134 West 21st Street (building right across from the studio) and we have agreed that the 134 Building is most suitable for us to work in. This building will assure easy transportation of the materials as it is located across the street from the West Side Gallery. When the time comes we will be transporting all materials from the Sculpture Building to 134 West 21st Street- trucking providing by SVA upon request. The freight is large enough to fit at least 2 pieces of 8'x4' so that is also a plus. We are working to get more light into the space. Also, please note we will sharing the space with 4 other interior design students as they build for the DIFFA event. They estimate needing a 15' x 15' space and will work around our schedules.
  • Stephen and Andrew have consulted with Damon on the laptop usage and his advice would be to use a desktop considering the laptop will not last to stay on everyday risking the fact it would overheat. We would need to consider what we need to do to bring a data line for access to the net or even a possibility of using a wireless card- TBD.
  • I am currently compiling all the senior thesis submissions and working on the text and graphics to be submitted for vinyl lettering. I need a list of all student names and professors in the show categorized from first year to third year. I will take care of the fourth year. Its my understanding that we are taping around the artwork on the wall- are we purchasing the colored tape or sending it out to be made as a vinyl?. Basically- I need a list from the 'selection group'. We should also have someone proof the list to assure that all names are spelled correctly and under the right year.
  • As far as the senior submissions- we have 9 people who submitted work to be printed at 5 x 7 and made into booklets- this is great! I have some extra card stock from a previous project, so I am going to put together one booklet as an example and have the class review it before printing all 9 booklets.

We have several tasks to complete in the upcoming weeks so please make yourselves available and work hard!
